Use of Header Tags

Domain Canonicalization

Except the difficult part of the pronunciation, domain canonicalization is basically domain redirection. Search engine optimization is a big topic and no one can cover the entire topic of search engine optimization in a single post. So let me try to float your boat with the posts.

Keyword Rich Content

Before you plan to post about anything you like, identify the keywords for the article. Try to figure how people can find this post on search engines. Guess the keywords they will type on search box. If you have the answers you already have the keywords. Repeat the keywords throughout your article a number of times say 3-4 times. Don’t repeat too many times or you might kill your readers. Keep your keyword density upto between 5%-20%. No jumping of the seat, 20% is enough to make a mess on your content and to kill your readers. Keyword rich content might kick start your SEO but it will give your blog a cheap, spammy look. So forget about sacrificing your readers experience of your blog for the sake of SEO.

SEO on your URL and page title

The keywords that you have in your mind will need to be the most common words in your article. Type the keywords in post title which will automatically be your page title and URL if you are using wordpress blog and have the permalink setup like this: barefly.com/2007/12/05/sample-post/

Try to do at least one bold tag.

Since there is a big confusion about whether all the heading tags make any difference i recommand you to check this post.

Focus on blog niche

Having substantial amount of articles on a similar or same topic will boost your chance to rank higher than others competing you for the same topic. If you have a blog with 50-100 pages of content on the same topic, search engines will start to think you are the authority of the topic and might show your blog on the first page.

Seo friendly blog templates

Search engines love easy to navigate sites. Make sure your blog is easily accessible to the search engines. Search engines tend to hate too much Frames, Flash and Java script. Keep your blog template simple and clean which will help search engine robots to well index your site. If you do it right, search engine robots will index your site a lot faster and more accurately.

Keep your blog free from dead links and not found pages.

Interlink you blog

Search engines index your blog by sending robot crawlers to track your posts and follow the links. Try to make it easier for the robots to get around. Interlinking wisely will do the trick. Having a sitemap ready for the robots will help them index faster. Keep your category pages in your sidebar and make sure every page links back to the main page. If you are writing a new post and any of your previous post relates to this post, consider linking to the older post.

Update on a regular basis

Content is king. The more you update your blog the more often search engine spiders will crawl your posts and faster you will get indexed. If you are regular on blogging, search engines will index your article within days or even hours rather than weeks or months! Search engines love blogs because they update regularly.

Domain name

I was never a search engine expert neither right now but what I figured is if you have a domain that is your keyword, its only a matter of time that your domain will climb the first place for the keyword. That’s why business.com is that much costly. Don’t worry if business.com is way to much costly, you can choose domains like businessblogging.com instead of emptying your bank account for business.com. Before you buy your domain do a little research to see if the domain is banned by Google.

Well I was able to solve my problem and now google is indexing my pages on a regular basis.

Banned domain?
It’s been a long time that I have been looking for a cute little domain for my blog. It was almost impossible to find a good little domain because all the good domains are already fetched. Then all of a sudden barefly.com caught my eyes. I almost immediately fetched the domain giving not a single second to think why is it still free to register. I figured the domain on a list of expired domain names by the way. So when I figured search engines aren’t listing my blog hosted on barefly.com, the fear of owning a banned domain was rising high. I did a quick search on all the major search engines and on archive.org for any pages listed. I figured all the major search engines had no match on barefly.com. It made me believe that barefly.com isn’t an already banned domain name. If barefly.com was banned by google, it must have some pages still listed on yahoo and vice versa. If it’s banned by all the search engines, it will have something about it on archive.org. Just as I wasn’t able to find anything about the domain, It made me believe that no one ever used it before. So the problem wasn’t about a banned domain but you guys must do a quick search on all the major search engines and on archive.org to make sure you aren’t going to buy a banned domain.

Just to give you some clue, If you aren’t sure whether your domain is a banned one, do a site:yourdomain.com search on all the major search engines. Do a search on archive.org to see if anything is listed their. If anything is listed on archive.org about the domain and other search engine’s doesn’t have any match, chances are your domain is banned.

My domain is not banned, what to do next?
If you have a google account, just log in and go to www.google.com/analytics. Add your site and go to the Presentation tab then click on Theme Editor. Now click on the Header.php file and paste the code after and save it. Click verify on the google analytics and let it gather the data. Go to www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ and add your site. Add the tracking code to your wordpress theme and let google analyst gather the data. Visit after some time and it will give you some information on your blog.

All In One Seo Pack
All In One Seo Pack is the best plugin to optimize your blog for a better search engine experience. Download the plugin here: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/ and upload it in your plugins directory of the wordpress folder. Go to the Plugins tab of your wordpress control panel and activate the plugin. Now every time you write a new post don’t forget to add information on the all in one SEO pack found right after the write post box.

Google Sitemap generator
Download the Google sitemap generator here: www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/ and upload the plugin to your Themes folder using the file manager of your hosting. Activate the plugin from your Plugins tab and go to the options tab. Click on XML-sitemap and build a sitemap.

Optimal Title
This plugin will make your title more search engine optimized. download the plugin here: elasticdog.com/2004/09/optimal-title/ and upload the plugin on your themes folder. Activate the plugin from Plugins tab and you are done.

I did everything, now what?
Patience is a great virtue. You did everything right but to see the result perhaps you have to wait a few more days. Check the google analytics stats and check the stats from google webmaster tools. Don’t stop writing posts in the mean time just so you don’t loose the frequency and spiders can find fresh content/ .

I have been noticing Google wasn’t listing my posts. It’s only then I have decided to check things out and improve SEO for my blog. I have installed all in one SEO pack and Google sitemap generator for my blog and after a day, I figured things are gradually improving. I have got all of my posts listed on Google within a day! Okay they worked like a charm I know but consider the fact that, many blogs out there don’t even get listed within the first month! I should be a lucky blogger then! and of course indeed, I am happy about it. So any plans to do more SEO job? Of course yes! But I don’t want to loose my ranking because of doing something wrong. SEO is a tight game. If you do something wrong, your rankings might fall rapidly, even within a day may be! Worst case scenario, you might get banned by search engines. That means no traffic, no page views and no blog popularity. Your blog is dead! So make sure you know what not to do and what search engines love. Put your blog on safe side by doing good SEO job.

Grab too many links too fast and kill your blog

Link building is an essential part of search engine Optimization. Get your blog as many links as possible but don’t do it like crazy and don’t do it like you are driving a Formula 1 car! You are doing search engine optimization, and getting thousands of links within a days is not a good practice at all. Avoid black hat search engine optimization. Don’t get too many links form the same IP. Be careful when you get anchor links, don’t get links with same anchor text. If you are on the process of getting links, don’t stop it. Otherwise search engine spiders might think your site is no longer useful since no site or blog is linking to your blog.

Try to cheat search engines and get busted!

If you tease a monkey, what do you expect in return? A kiss from the monkey? Sweet! Dude you’re smart ! how about a deadly kiss that smells like an ass of a 80 years old?

Well anyway, If you want to save your ass, don’t cheat a search engine. Search engines are like mean girls, you cheat to improve your ranking and you are getting loved by them but whenever they figured out you are cheating on them, you can’t run to save your ass! Search engines will nail you down! So Don’t do anything that you think will help your rankings which is a cheating. Don’t add too many keywords or repeat the same keywords in title, keyword and description tag. Don’t mess up your posts with too many keywords.

Incase of submitting on directories, try to avoid using the same title and description and submit on the appropriate directory.

Keep your site well organized and clean. Unless your site is very popular or art focused, avoid using flashy animations and designs. Your blog or site should always load fast and incase of loading, contents should show up first and then the design. Create sitemap and organize the menu just so it is easy and comfortable to navigate. Try to keep everything simple. Try to inter link within different pages of your site.

No relationship with ghost!

Linking to another site that is already banned is like making love with ghost, which is something your girl friend or fiancé would never appreciate. So why do you think the search engines will? This is why it is important that you should never exchange links with a banned site. If you exchange, you might get banned too! Remove the links from the banned site as soon as possible.

I guess you’ve got a picture of do’s and don’ts? If you ever get busted, undo what you did wrong right after you have identified what you did wrong.
